MLK Day
Like many folks (at least those of use in education), we get MLK Day off every year. As a kid, I remember my father being adamant about my siblings and me not wasting the day and taking the time to "learn something new" about Martin Luther King, Jr. (which, in the case of a good amount of public school education, meant learning more than what they would teach us during school.
I carry that same energy to this day with my son, and I took some time during our lunch to talk about Martin Luther King. Our conversation was quite productive, powerful, and insightful. We got into the good, the bad, and the ugly of not only MLK but the entire Civil Rights Movement (as much as a 10-year-old can focus through, at least). After that, we talked about my upcoming guest conducting gig with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis and the repertoire being played (featuring the music of Richard Smallwood, Kirk Franklin, and Florence Price). We even explored who Florence Price was and how important she was to the orchestral movement.
Take the time to talk about the uncomfortable, especially with the next generation.
Take the time to educate.
Take the time to inspire.
Stay tuned for more!
